Doggy Style
Doggy style is a sex position in which one participant bends over, crouches on all fours (usually on hands and knees), or lies on their abdomen, for sexual intercourse, other forms of sexual penetration, or other sexual activity.
Doggy style is a form of rear-entry position. Other related positions include the spooning position, in which the receiving partner lies on their side, and the reverse cowgirl sex position.
Between sex partners, the person in the doggy style position is usually passive, while the other partner is active. Either partner may be dominant or submissive depending on preference.
Practices
The posture adopted by the receiving partner resembles lordosis behavior — a physical posture seen in many female mammals when ready for mating. The primary characteristic is a ventral arching of the spine.
During vaginal penetration from behind, the penis may penetrate deeper into the vagina, reaching preferential contact with the posterior wall of the vagina and possibly the posterior fornix.
In this position, the receiving partner implicitly gives the active partner more control over their body. The active partner may stimulate erogenous zones such as:
- Genitals
- Nipples
- Buttocks
- Use of sex toys such as vibrators or dildos
Some participants may find the position erotic or sexually provocative.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Doggy style may be preferred if either partner has back issues or certain medical conditions. During intercourse, friction from the scrotum may stimulate the clitoris, potentially producing orgasm or sexual stimulation.
For some women, this position helps stimulate the “G-spot.” However, because clitoral stimulation may be limited, additional manual stimulation may sometimes be needed.
Doggy style is also commonly used in group sex scenarios because it allows easier access for additional forms of sexual activity.
Some women may feel vulnerable in this position because it involves trust and a transfer of control to the active partner. Others may find this dynamic arousing and relationship-affirming.
Some people consider doggy style less romantic because eye contact and kissing are more difficult. However, surveys have shown it to be among the most popular sexual positions.
